Prior to 2005 we do not have detailed historic records for every event in track and field, but it is unlikely there has ever been a better day for a female distance runner from Chardon than Rachel Banks had at Woodridge. She opened with a 5:00.57 1600m run, less than a second from the school record of 4:59.73 set by Jane Evely in 1986. She followed that a short while later with a 2:13.79, eclipsed in Chardon history only by her own 2:12.42 set at last year's Regional championship. As of this morning, those times place her 2nd in the state in both events!
Josh Sopchak also had a pretty incredible day. In the 1600m run, he ran a PR of 4:21.55 to finish 2nd behind Kyle Mau's state leading effort, which places Josh 6th on the all-time Chardon list. He came back in the 800m with a time of 1:57.33 to finish 3rd behind last years DII State 1600m Champion and this year's DI State Indoor 1600m Champion. That effort places him 3rd among all Chardon athletes since we have kept detailed records (2004), behind Ben Robinson (State Champion 800m, 2004) and Emil Heineking (State Champion 3200m, 2007).
Other athletes placing in the top 10 Chardon lists since 2004 included:
Ben Baierl (100m, 11.43) - 7th
Ben Baierl (200m, 22.85) - 4th
Patrick Sullivan (400m, 51.97) - 6th
Jacob Urcheck (Discus, 132-11) - 7th Note: he threw 135+ earlier this year
Haley Frank (100m, 13.00) - 8th Note: she ran 12.86 earlier this year
Jessica Krebs (1600m, 5:23.65) - 5th
Mikaylie Park (3200m, 11:57.16) - 10th Note: She ran 11:30.75 last year and is 4th on the list. However, it is notable that she ran in 88 F temperature yesterday - brutal for a distance race in the spring.
Deanna Ogrinc (100 Hurdles, 17.11) - 9th Note: She ran 16.6 hand-timed on Wednesday of last week
Deanna Ogrinc (300 Hurdles, 48.10) - 3rd
Lily Baker (Pole Vault, 8-0) - 8th Note: She has already jumped 8-6 earlier this season.
